About the Open Band

We are a group of amateur musicians who play at the contra dances in Wyoming, a suburb of Cincinnati, OH. As our name implies, we welcome all musicians, no matter what level of expertise you have.

We first began playing together in Pam and Fred Stoll's living room, and about a week later, Monday, February 20, 2006, we were excited to begin performing for contra dances. We typically rehearse every few weeks. Anyone is encouraged to join our rehearsals to learn the tunes we'll be performing at our next contra dance. If you are unable to attend, feel free to download our tunes to practice from and join us at one of our performances on a Monday evening, once every six weeks or so.

Currently, we are scheduled to play on the following dates in 2023:

April 24th  •  May 22nd

We welcome new musicians. If you would like to be added to our email list to receive updates for upcoming rehearsals and gigs, please contact us.

What is Contra Dancing?

Contra is a communal style folk dance that is fun and easy to learn. No partner or experience is necessary, but you do need soft-soled shoes. A caller leads the dancers though a series of moves. Since it's a communal dance, most people change partners after each dance.

Dress comfortably, since the dances are energetic and you will get warm! Common attire for either gender is shorts or jeans and t-shirts. Many women prefer flowing skirts because they're fun to dance in.

Contra is a style of dance where it's more important to have fun than do the dance a particular way, where people are friendly and welcoming, and where others will be glad to help you learn the basic steps.
